Welcome

The sediments of the Loire river and its tributaries have been the focus of many studies, over the last decades.  The resources presented in existing databases are rarely spatialized.  Their operational use is thus difficult.

Through the Research-Data-Information axis of the Plan Loire Grandeur Nature 2007-2013, and with the support of the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), the Etablissement Public Loire and the DREAL Centre, the GéHCO laboratory (Tours University) and the Géo-Hyd consultants have worked together to answer these issues.

INFO-Sed makes sharing this knowledge easy, through the use of a unique tool, specific to the sediments of the continental Loire river basin.

This spatialized and indexed census of resources allows one to know which fields are documented and which questions have yet to be answered, which areas have been studied, what protocols were used, as well as where, when, why and how construction and management work was applied.  It also gives direct access to the documents’ graphic contents.

This tool is developed and updated through the Sediment Observation Network of the Loire river basin (Réseau d’Observation des Sédiments de la Loire et de ses Affluents – Réseau O.S.L.A.), which brings together over forty researchers, and more precisely through its Axis 4 dedicated to knowledge transfer towards a larger public: “Sediment management: tools and valorization”.

In 2011, establishing this network was one of the main projects of the Loire research site (C.N.R.S.), which is itself part of the LTER network (Long Term Ecological Research).

How to use INFO-Sed

Looking for data and documents is easy!  You may choose among three options, listed in the tabs above.  You can either:

  • scroll the documents via the bibliography, an view them either in chronological order or in alphabetical order by first author’s name ;
  • narrow your search by filling in search fields, such as author name, publication date, document type, theme ;
  • search by geographical criteria, using the associated map.  Each orange dot corresponds to a document.  The size of the dot varies with the number of figures that are associated to the document.  Click on a dot to view its index card, but also the PDF and associated figures.  A layer manager offers the possibility to better comprehend the sedimentary context of the Loire basin: geology, erosion hazard, referenced obstacles to flow (ROE), main watersheds’ limit…  You must zoom enough if you wish to see the kilometric points (PK) and the ROE reference number.

Updates

The first phase of development covered six months (September 2011 – March 2012), and involved the installation of this platform, as well as the indexation of the first documents.  This collection is accessible yet far from complete.  Further update and implementation are planned for year 2012.  Furthermore, due to trademarked material, some indexed documents may not be available for consultation (especially publications issued from international journals).  We are trying to solve this problem, but please contact us for access. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
